Training Course for Teaching Assistants on Canvas
Overview
This project aims to support TA candidates in coaching students effectively in the teaching practicum course (EFA program). The design process follows Dick and Carey's Systematic Design of Instruction model.
Design Phase 1
Interview &
Needs Assessment
I conducted interviews with subject matter experts and current TAs to assess the needs of this instruction.
Needs were identified by analyzing a gap between Desired Status of performance and Current Status of performance.
Instructional Goal
Generation
I generated instructional goals that directly addresses the each area of the assessed needs using these three criteria:
-
Solution to performance problem
-
Stakeholder's approval
-
Sufficient resources
Goal Analysis &
Subordinate Skill Analysis
I meticulously analyzed the information and the sequence of the steps required to perform the instructional goals and made a flowchart of subordinate skills for each instructional goal.

Design Phase 2
01
Writing Performance Objectives
I wrote terminal objectives for each instructional goal and subordinate objectives for each subordinate skill identified in the goal analysis. I included three components in the objectives: Conditions, Behavior, and Criteria.
02
Develop Assessment Instruments
I selected instruments to design assessment that directly aligns with each performance objective. I designed practice tests and post tests for this instruction.
03
Design Instructional Sequence
I clustered the performance objectives to be learned together and curated a sequence of the clusters of instruction. The sequence followed the order found in the goal analysis.
04
Develop Instructional Strategy
I developed instructional strategies for each cluster of instruction in the following structure: Preinstructional activities to enhance motivation, Content presentation, Learner participation, and Assessment.
